Must-visit places and experiences

Tiger Hill, at 2,590 meters, offers one of the world's most spectacular sunrise panoramas. On clear mornings, the first rays of the sun illuminate the snow-capped peak of Kanchenjunga (8,586m, world's 3rd highest), turning it from grey to pink to golden, while the entire Eastern Himalayan range stretches across the horizon. On exceptionally clear days, Mount Everest (8,849m) is visible 225 km away. The experience of watching the sun paint these towering peaks in ever-changing colors, while standing in chilly pre-dawn darkness, is life-changing.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, affectionately called the 'Toy Train,' is a UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge railway that has been running since 1881. The charming steam and diesel locomotives navigate an engineering marvel of loops, zigzags, and gradients as they chug through the streets of Darjeeling and up to Ghum India's highest railway station at 2,258 meters. The most popular ride is the 2-hour Darjeeling-Ghum joyride that passes through the famous Batasia Loop, where the track spirals over itself through a manicured garden with a war memorial and direct views of Kanchenjunga.

Travel guides, tips, and stories

Darjeeling’s weather shifts within hours, making layers essential through the day. Cold mornings, mild afternoons, wind, and mist shape clothing choices across seasons. Light base layers, flexible mid-layers, and wind-blocking outerwear help manage walks, viewpoints, cafés, and open-air travel without constant outfit changes.

Kalimpong in February brings clear mountain views, cool sunny afternoons around 15–18°C, orchid nurseries in bloom, and quiet monastery visits. Deolo Hill and Durpin Dara offer wide views of Kanchenjunga, while Teesta river drives add variety. Boutique homestays, local markets, and peaceful cafés make it ideal for a relaxed Valentine’s trip.
October-November and March-May are best. Autumn (October-November) offers the clearest mountain views with Kanchenjunga fully visible. Spring (March-May) brings blooming rhododendrons and pleasant temperatures. Monsoons (June-September) bring heavy rain and clouds obscuring mountain views. Winters (December-February) are cold (0-5°C) but atmospheric.
On exceptionally clear days (usually in autumn/winter), you can see Mount Everest from Tiger Hill, approximately 225 km away. However, the star of the show is Kanchenjunga (3rd highest peak), which dominates the panorama just 74 km away. The sunrise view of Kanchenjunga is Darjeeling's signature experience.
Absolutely. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site operating since 1881. The 2-hour joyride from Darjeeling to Ghum (the highest railway station in India at 2,258m) passes through Batasia Loop a spectacular spiral where the train crosses over itself with Kanchenjunga views throughout.
Darjeeling tea is called the 'Champagne of teas' because of its unique muscatel flavor a natural musky sweetness found nowhere else on Earth, caused by the specific altitude, soil, climate, and the Chinese tea plant variety grown here. There are 87 tea estates, and the best way to appreciate the tea is to visit an estate like Happy Valley or Makaibari for a tour and tasting.
The nearest airport is Bagdogra (90 km, 3-hour drive). New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the nearest major railway station (88 km). The road up from Siliguri/NJP winds through the hills with spectacular views. Alternatively, take the Toy Train from NJP (7-8 hours) for a heritage experience.
Kanchenjunga does not show up every day.
Clear mountain views depend heavily on weather. Even in peak season, clouds can block the range for days.
The roads are steep everywhere.
Short distances on maps often mean sharp uphill walks. Comfortable shoes are not optional.
Water supply can be limited.
Many hotels face water shortages, especially in peak season. Long showers are not always possible.
Toy train tickets sell out fast.
Especially during holidays. Booking in advance is essential if it is on your list.
Traffic jams are common during peak months.
Narrow hill roads combined with tourist rush can delay even short drives.
October is clearer than summer.
Post-monsoon skies often offer better mountain visibility than crowded May and June.
Cash is still useful.
Smaller cafés and local taxis may prefer cash due to network issues.
Evenings get cold quickly.
Even in summer, temperatures drop sharply after sunset. Layers are necessary year-round.
