Summer season is pure gold for wildlife enthusiasts as rising heat within the forest forces animals to the outer circle. Rising mercury across the Deccan Plateau during the months of March, April and May unlocks one of the most spectacular theatres of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
As water resources in the dense forests of Mudumalai and Nagarhole start drying out, the gentle giants move in massive herds towards the life-saving Kabini reservoir. This unique phenomenon makes summer months the best time for elephant sightings in India. You can also be a part of this elephant odyssey and today we will show you how.
Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary: The Crown Jewel of Elephant Sightings
Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary ranks first when it comes to frequent elephant sightings. The secret to its summer success lies in the Kabini River reservoir. Coupled with intensifying heat, the water levels fall. This exposes vast spreads of fresh grass. Despite the remaining forest turning all brown and brittle, the backwaters retain its vitality as a lush oasis.
Countless elephants from the neighboring dry forests of Bandipur and Nagarkhole migrate towards the Kabini river banks. You must have seen viral videos of 50 to 100 elephants charging across open plains or taking a bath in Kabini backwaters. Chances are high that they have been filmed in Kabini wildlife sanctuary.
Kabini is equally breathtaking during the off-season months of June to September. Read our story on planning A Different Kind Of Kabini Trip During the Off-Season.
Nagarhole National Park: The Heart of the Ecosystem
Nagarhole shares an adjoining border with Kabini thus delivering equally rewarding views as Kabini backwaters elephants. You can expect constant movement of elephant herds between these zones as Kabini is a part of Nagarhole terrain. Alongside with the rising Celsius, elephants continue their search for water. This increases the likelihood of elephant sightings.
Although you might not always get to encounter the massive herds as that of Kabini, you will spot multiple ones throughout your jungle safari. Nagarhole has the perfect mix of open patches and dense forests. This promises a balanced safari experience. You might see elephants grazing calmly near water bodies, emerging from thick vegetation, or crossing the road. The rich diversity of flora at Nagarhole adds to the degree of excitement and anticipation to your journey.
Nagarhole has a higher share of water holes (locally known as kere) and perennial streams. As a result, you don’t always need to travel to the river bank to spot the herds. The thinning canopy makes it easier to spot the grey giants making the way past rosewood and teak trees. Nagarhole is the top contender for travellers preferring fewer crowds with high chances of sightings in their summer wildlife safari of South India.
How to Reach Kabini? By Bus, Flights and Train?
Kabini is one of the most popular wildlife hotspots in Karnataka. However, there is no railway station or airport at Kabini. As a result, you will have to travel to Mysore or Bengaluru and then travel via road to the wildlife sanctuary. Let’s see how:
Flights to Kabini (Fastest choice)
- Mysore Airport (MYQ) is 80 km from Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary. From here you can book a prepaid taxi or app-based cabs for reaching Kabini following a 1.5 to 2-hour drive.
- Kempegowda Int'l Airport (BLR) is 240 km from Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary. From here, it takes 4.5 to 5 hours to reach the Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary.
Trains to Kabini (Cheapest choice)
Mysore Junction (MYS) is 70 km from Kabini making it the nearest railway junction. Mysore is very well-connected to Bangalore and other major Indian cities via Kaveri Express, Shatabdi Express, and more. From here, you can take a private cab to Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary for 2000-3000 INR.
Buses to Kabini
No bus will drop you till the gates of Kabini forest guesthouses. However, you can get pretty close to the forest via public transport.
- Take a KSRTC bus from Bengaluru to Handpost or HD Kote. From here you can hire a private jeep or auto-rickshaw to travel the 30-40 km distance.
- You can also take a KSRTC bus to HD Kote or Sargur from Mysore. The bus ride takes around 1.5 hours.
Bandipur National Park: For Dense Safaris & Active Elephant Movements
Bandipur National park lying on the other side of the border in Karnataka offers a totally different visual experience than that of Kabini. Its undulating terrain and dense forest patches reduce the level of open visibility compared to Kabini.
You never know, just taking a turn in your safari ride might bring you face to face with an elephant herd. Prominent water tanks are located near the safari tracks and peak summer months force the gentle giants to move towards the same. You can also go deeper inside the forest during summer months making it the best time for elephant sightings in India.
Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary: The Crucial Juncture of Elephant Corridor
The Tholpetty and Muthanga ranges of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala serve as a primary elephant corridor zone. Herd movement increases significantly as the pre-monsoon showers begin during late April and May. Elephants use Wayanad for migrating from the dry forests of Bandipur to the evergreen stretches of the Western Ghats.
This offers an excellent opportunity to witness massive herds crossing a mountain stream with the misty peaks of Wayanad in the backdrop. The open viewing conditions of Kabini are unparalleled. Nonetheless, Wayanad wildlife sanctuary offers a unique chance to observe the natural migration patterns of the elephants.
Mudumalai National Park: The Great Connector
Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai National Park is an essential part of the puzzle connecting Bandipur and Nagarhole Wildlife Sanctuary. The highway passing through Mudumalai park offers excellent chances of elephant encounters. The gentle giants come to the banks of Moyar River during peak summer. You might see them crossing the river or descending its steep banks to quench their thirst. Mudumalai is ideal for travelers who want to witness the connectivity between different reserves.
