Ugadi Holiday, No Train Confirmation? The Weekend Destinations That Still Work

Train didn’t confirm. Happens every long weekend. You check once, twice, refresh again, and suddenly you’re rethinking the whole plan. That’s usually when road trips start sounding like a much better idea.

Chikmagalur

If you just want a quiet break without planning too much, Chikmagalur usually works. You don’t have to keep running around, the place itself does enough.

Getting there

Around 5 to 6 hours from Bangalore by car. Buses are there, especially overnight ones, and you can usually still find seats even when trains are full.

Weather range

Somewhere between 15°C to 28°C. Mornings feel cool, evenings are nice, afternoons are a little warm but nothing tiring.

Must experience

Go up to Mullayanagiri early if you can. Later it gets crowded and the whole point is the quiet. Coffee estate stays are a big part of the experience, so it’s better to pick a good one and just spend time there instead of trying to cover too much.

Things people usually miss

Everyone rushes viewpoints. But just walking around inside a plantation or sitting outside with coffee is what actually makes the trip feel like a break.

Coorg

Coorg is even easier in a way. You don’t need a plan. You just check in somewhere nice and take it slow.

How to reach

Roughly 5 to 6 hours from Bangalore. Buses are frequent and pretty straightforward.

Weather

Around 18°C to 30°C. Slightly warmer than Chikmagalur, but mornings and evenings are still comfortable.

Must experience

Abbey Falls is quick, Raja’s Seat around sunset is nice, but honestly the stay matters more than the spots here.

Things people usually miss

People try to jump between places that are far apart. It ends up feeling rushed. Coorg is better when you don’t try to “cover” it.

Wayanad

Wayanad feels a bit less crowded if you time it right. It’s not empty, but it’s not as packed as some of the usual options.

Getting there

About 6 to 7 hours by road from Bangalore. Buses go till Kalpetta and nearby areas.

Weather range

20°C to 32°C. It can feel slightly humid during the day, but evenings settle down.

What not to miss here

Edakkal Caves are worth it if you don’t mind a bit of a climb. Waterfalls like Soochipara are better early in the day before it gets crowded.

Things people usually miss

Reaching late to waterfalls. By noon, it’s full. Early mornings are completely different.

Ooty

Ooty gets busy, no point pretending otherwise. But it’s still easy, especially if you’re going last minute.

How to reach

6 to 7 hours from Bangalore by road. You can also take a train till Mettupalayam and go up from there.

Weather range

Around 12°C to 25°C. It’s cooler than most places around this time.

Must experience

Ooty Lake is best early, otherwise it’s too crowded. A short drive towards Coonoor makes the trip better.

Things people usually miss

Most people stay inside town. The quieter drives outside are actually nicer.

Gokarna

If hills are not feeling like it this time, Gokarna is the easy backup. You don’t really plan much here. You reach, find your stay, and the rest sort of falls into place.

Getting there

It’s about 7 to 8 hours from Bangalore. If you don’t want to drive, just take an overnight bus and wake up there. That’s usually the simplest way.

Weather range

It’s on the warmer side, around 25 to 33. Afternoons can feel a bit much, so most people naturally slow down then and head out again in the evening.

What not to miss here

Kudle and Om Beach are more than enough. You don’t have to go chasing every beach on the map. Just pick one stretch, sit there for a bit, maybe walk to the next, stop somewhere for food, come back. That’s pretty much how it goes.

Things people usually miss

Trying to “cover” Gokarna like it’s a checklist. It doesn’t work that way. The more you try to fit in, the more tiring it gets, especially in the heat. It’s better when you just stay put and let the day move slowly.

Tips for last-minute Ugadi trips
