Visit Kaup Lighthouse & Beach
Standing tall along Karnataka's coastline for over 125 years, the Kaup Lighthouse is one of the most recognizable landmarks near Udupi. Built in 1901 by the British, the striking black-and-white lighthouse rises about 27 metres (89 feet) above the shoreline and offers some of the best coastal views in the region.
A short climb up the spiral staircase rewards visitors with panoramic views of the Arabian Sea, endless stretches of coastline, coconut groves, and fishing boats dotting the horizon. Sunset is the most popular time to visit, as the sky turns brilliant shades of orange and pink while waves crash against the rocky shoreline below.
The beach itself is less crowded than many of Karnataka's popular coastal destinations, making it perfect for a relaxed evening walk. The large black rock formations around the lighthouse create excellent photography opportunities, especially during the monsoon when dramatic waves pound the coast.
One interesting fact many visitors don't know is that Kaup is also commonly called Kapu, with both names referring to the same destination. The beach also sits along a busy shipping route, and on clear days you can often spot cargo ships far out at sea from the lighthouse viewpoint. Many visitors leave immediately after sunset, but staying a little longer offers a different experience as the lighthouse illuminates the coastline and fishing boats begin lighting up the horizon.

One Thing Most Visitors Miss
Most people climb the lighthouse, take a few photographs, watch the sunset, and leave. What they miss is staying another 20 to 30 minutes after sunset.
Once the crowds disappear, the lighthouse begins glowing against the darkening sky, fishing boats switch on their lights offshore, and the sound of the waves becomes the dominant soundtrack. It's often the most peaceful part of the entire visit.
