Wildlife Spotting at Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary
Wildlife spotting at Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary offers a completely different side of Andhra Pradesh. Unlike the dense forests of nearby Nallamala, Rollapadu is a vast open grassland ecosystem where the landscape stretches endlessly towards the horizon. Located around 60 km from Kurnool, the sanctuary is one of the few protected grassland habitats in South India and is particularly known for its birdlife and blackbuck population.
The biggest attraction here is the chance to see blackbucks, one of India's most elegant antelope species. Herds of these graceful animals can often be spotted grazing across the open plains, with males easily recognizable by their striking spiral horns. Watching them sprint across the grasslands is one of the highlights of a visit to Rollapadu.
The sanctuary is also famous among birdwatchers. It serves as an important habitat for several resident and migratory bird species. Historically, Rollapadu was one of the few places where the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard was regularly sighted. While sightings have become extremely rare today, the sanctuary remains an important conservation area for grassland birds. Visitors may also spot harriers, eagles, kestrels, larks, owls, and numerous migratory birds during the winter months.
What makes Rollapadu special is the feeling of openness. There are no dense forests blocking the view. Instead, visitors can scan the grasslands for wildlife while enjoying peaceful landscapes that feel very different from most Indian wildlife destinations.
